Imagine: what if electricity were not simply an invisible source of energy,
but a living network moving through plants, microbes and even stones?
And what if technology were not based on extraction, but on reciprocity
and ecological coexistence?
We warmly invite you to the opening of our new exhibition
For Circuits and Ceremonies, we have invited Sunjoo Lee to
continue her long-running research project Electric Garden
in dialogue with the work of two other artists, Claire Williams and
Ryan Jordan, who view electricity not as an invisible, unlimited
energy source, but as a living and relational process.
From 16:00 to 16:30, there will be a jam session featuring rudimentary
crystal amplifiers made by participants in Ryan Jordan's
Derelict Electronics workshop earlier in the day.

From 16:30, there will be a tour of the exhibition guided by
artists Sunjoo Lee, Claire Williams and Ryan Jordan.
Throughout the exhibition, there will be ample opportunity to
explore together with the artists through collaborative experiments,
exchanges and workshops, organised in collaboration with FIBER Festival.
Together, these activities investigate new connections between matter
and meaning, technology and magic, science and ritual.
When: 13, 14 and 15 October • 15:00–17:00
Location: Zone2Source (the Glass House, Amstelpark)
Language: English
Over the course of three days, Sunjoo Lee and Claire Williams
conduct artistic research together within the exhibition, exploring
where their practices intersect and can lead to new paths.
The research focuses on material experiments with electronic
components, measuring invisible waves and electrical
currents in the environment, and interpreting patterns.
In the afternoon, the doors are open to visitors to view the
experiments and engage in conversation with the artists.
performance
Mudcell Composition IV
by Niels Gräber and Isaac van den Aker
When: Saturday, 24 October • 11:00–13:00, free walk-in
Where: Zone2Source (the Glass House, Amstelpark)
Times: two performances, 11:15–11:45 and 12:15–12:45
Mudcell Composition IV is a sound performance in
collaboration with the microbial life of Electric Garden.
Inspired by Sunjoo Lee's long-running research project,
Niels Gräber and Isaac van den Aker have developed a system
to co-create sound with electrogenic bacteria, which normally
occur in swamp mud. The fluctuating voltages of the organisms
actively shape the composition, influencing rhythms and frequencies.
When: 21 November, 13:00–17:00
Where: Zone2Source (the Glass House, Amstelpark)
Tickets: €25 / €15 students (maximum 25 participants)

Claire Williams and Sunjoo Lee invite participants
to a hands-on workshop in which we will explore the entanglement
of matter and meaning, and how this manifests in the application
of technology. Claire is interested in fabricating circuits and
raw components as a means to detect and interpret energies.
Sunjoo investigates how measured microbial electricity can tell
us more than a simple quantification of voltage. In this workshop,
participants will be introduced to the artists' joint research
through practical experiments and demonstrations.
This workshop is organised in collaboration with FIBER Festival.
When: Sunday, 6 December, 14:00–17:00
Where: Zone2Source (the Glass House, Amstelpark)
With Evelyn Wan, Rodrigo Ochigame, Sunjoo Lee and Claire Williams
In this concluding event, which brings together the results and
reflections of Circuits and Ceremonies, artists and
researchers will give talks about their research and engage in
conversation with each other and the audience. Topics range from
alternative paradigms of computation and intelligence to technology
and magic, feminist technology and more. The speakers are Evelyn Wan
(Assistant Professor of Media, Art and Society at Utrecht University),
Rodrigo Ochigame (anthropologist and historian of science), and
artists Claire Williams and Sunjoo Lee.

Transition with us
As a testing ground for art and ecology, and as Zoöp Amstelpark,
we do not merely want to address these issues thematically, but
also put our words into practice. We are currently developing
concrete plans for how we, as an organisation, can contribute
to the transition: in relation to waste, transport, materials,
language, energy, our daily interactions with each other and
the world around us... and the technology we use.
An ecologically just society can only exist if we turn away from
Big Tech and start working with independent, transparent and fair
systems. As consumers, we have enormous power when we act collectively.
With this newsletter, we have moved away from Mailchimp and started
working with Keila and GrapesJS — a step towards greater digital autonomy.
After moving our cloud storage to Nextcloud, we are now planning
to stop using Instagram and Facebook from 27 January 2027.
We hope many of you will make the transition with us to independent,
open-source social media:
Mastodon
and
Pixelfed
.
See you there!
