I hope you are doing well! I am very happy to be in Rotterdam for our third participation in Art Rotterdam, where we are presenting two beautiful projects that start from personal memories and transform into universal narratives, inviting us to inhabit the quiet spaces between what is remembered and what is lost.
At the booth we have the work of Shimon Kamada, a Japanese artist based in Rotterdam. Kamada explores the fragility of memory by painting childhood scenes onto used canvases. Through a physical process of erosion with sandpaper, he uncovers underlying layers to create a "palimpsest" of personal history. These reconstructed fragments invite viewers to inhabit the voids, bridging the gap between his nostalgia and their own lived experience.
On the projections section we will be showing the film "Heaven must be like this" by Jiyan Düyü. In this intimate film, Düyü explores the universal experience of grief through the lives of three friends in a Lisbon pub. By weaving together Kurdish heritage and Cape Verdean identity, the narrative shifts the focus from the speaker to the listener. You are invited to sit at the table and become a silent participant in this deeply relatable story of loss and enduring human connection.
Hope to see you around and please do not hesitate to reach out if you want to learn more about these works! The fair goes on from today Thursday 26th of March until Sunday 29th of March.
