De lente is nog maar net begonnen en gevoelsmatig staat de zomer alweer voor de deur. In mei opent bij Nest de lente- en Out of Office (Still Here). Een over 'vrije tijd' en ongelijkheid tijdens de zomerperiode. In deze nieuwsbrief lees je over de en lichten we een deel van het publieke programma uit.

Wie kan er op vakantie, en wie blijft er thuis? Niet iedereen ervaart de zomervakantie op dezelfde manier. De manier waarop vrije tijd wordt ingevuld, hangt samen met sociale, economische en culturele omstandigheden, en zegt iets over toegang en (on)gelijkheid.
Voor veel mensen betekent de zomervakantie een periode van rust, vrijheid en ontspanning. Maar voor anderen betekent deze tijd iets anders: doorwerken, thuisblijven, je vervelen, misschien familie opzoeken of zorgen voor anderen. Wat betekent het om thuis te blijven in de zomer? Op welke manier wordt vrije tijd ingevuld door ‘thuisblijvers’ in een periode waarin er ook veel mensen het land verlaten, scholen dicht zijn en toeristen de stad instromen?
In de Out of Office (Still Here) nemen we bij Nest het begrip ‘vrije tijd’ onder de loep door juist tijdens de lange zomervakantie open te gaan voor alle thuisblijvers in de stad. Tegelijk bevraagt Out of Office (Still Here) het beeld van vakantie als ideaal. De belofte van ontsnapping en ontspanning wordt afgezet tegen persoonlijke en politieke realiteiten zoals ongelijke toegang tot sport en spel, of de impact van toerisme op .

Workshops voor kinderen
De Lentespeeltuin – twee workshops in de meivakantie

In de meivakantie organiseert Nest twee workshops voor kinderen van 7 tot 12 jaar. In de mei- en zomervakantie gaan we, met een beetje geluk en een lekker zonnetje, weer veel naar buiten. Voor veel kinderen die thuisblijven, wordt de speeltuin de plek om te spelen.
Tijdens deze workshops ontdekken we de wereld van speeltuinen, van de allereerste in Nederland tot bijzondere ontwerpen van kunstenaars. Daarna gaan we zelf aan de slag en ontwerpen we onze eigen speeltuin of speelobjecten. In juli volgt de uitgebreide workshopserie De Zomerspeeltuin, waarin kinderen kun verder kunnen uitbouwen.

Zomerse Zondag Salon met Philip Akkerman

Als onderdeel van de Out Of Office (Still Here) organiseert Nest twee workshops met Haagse kunstenaar Philip Akkerman.
Akkerman is vooral bekend van zijn enorme serie zelfportretten, die in 2022 bij Nest te zien waren. Ook is Akkerman de officiële Haagse Stadstekenaar van 2026. Hij tekent daarom een jaar lang stadsgezichten van de verschillende wijken in Den Haag met ei-tempera. In de eerste workshop laat Akkerman zien hoe je diepte en verte kunt aanbrengen in je tekeningen. Samen met Akkerman teken je deze middag je eigen stadsgezicht met perspectief. Tijdens de tweede workshop staat het schilderen en tekenen met ei-tempera centraal.
Deelname voor de workshop kost €10, samen met een geldig ticket voor de . Er geldt een maximum aantal deelnemers van 20 voor de workshop.
Net geïnstalleerd bij het Paleis van Justitie: Esther Hoogendijk – Omwerken
Deze is helaas niet toegankelijk voor publiek.
Vijftig rechthoekige sculpturen vormen een lange rij in tinten roze, magenta en lila, dwars door de daktuin van het Haagse Paleis van Justitie.
De sculpturen van Esther Hoogendijk zijn gekleurd met inkten die reageren op vocht: onder invloed van regen, dauw en condens verschuiven de kleuren subtiel van roze naar licht paars. In een deel van de sculpturen zijn bloem- en graszaden verwerkt, waardoor langzaam groene scheuten naar buiten breken.
Esther Hoogendijk is de zesde kunstenaar in een reeks van acht in het Paleis van Justitie. De is gecureerd door Daphne Verberg en kwam tot stand in samenwerking tussen Atelier en Nest. Het werk is helaas niet te zien voor het publiek. Wél kun je als bezoeker van het Paleis nog de 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 van Robert Pauwels (tot 20 april en 𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘱 𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 van afra eisma (tot 30 juni) zien.
Nest heeft een nieuwe voorzitter van de Raad van Toezicht: Sharon Gesthuizen!
We zijn blij onze nieuwe voorzitter van de Raad van Toezicht te verwelkomen: Sharon Gesthuizen. Sharon was tot voor kort directeur Art & Design bij ArtEZ Academie in Arnhem. Eerder was zij toezichthouder bij HKU en bij verschillende Haagse culturele instellingen. Ze woont al bijna twintig jaar in Den Haag en kent de Haagse kunstwereld van binnenuit. Daarnaast is Sharon gepassioneerd over democratie en recht: ze was tien jaar Tweede Kamerlid en rondt momenteel haar rechtenstudie in Rotterdam af.
Met haar brede ervaring in kunstonderwijs én politiek staat ze dicht bij de . Dat past goed bij Nest, waar en het begeleiden van jonge makers centraal staan. Sharon: “Voor deze makers zijn plekken als Nest onmisbaar. Ze vinden er ruimte voor experiment en expositie. Daarvoor zet ik mij graag in!”
Na acht jaar nemen we ook afscheid van voorzitter Susan Gloudemans. Acht jaar lang bracht zij een aanstekelijke energie naar Nest. Onder haar enthousiaste en betrokken maakte de organisatie ondermeer een transformatie van bestuur naar raad van toezicht. Ze gaf ruimte aan de artistieke ontwikkeling van Nest, waardoor nieuwe ideeën en experiment konden groeien. Nest is anno 2026 een stevige en professionele instelling, en dat in het onlangs verbouwde pand aan het Constant Rebecqueplein in Den Haag. Het voltallige team en de raad van toezicht van Nest zijn Susan Gloudemans zeer erkentelijk voor haar rol hierin.

Who is able to go on a vacation, and who stays at home during the summer? Not everyone experiences the summer holiday in the same way. The way leisure time is spent depends on social, economic, and cultural circumstances, and says something about acces and (in)equality.
For many, the summer holidays signify a time of rest, freedom and relaxation. Yet for others, the time takes on a different meaning: continuing to work, staying at home, passing the time in idleness, perhaps visiting family or caring for others. What does it mean to remain at home during the summer? How is leisure shaped by those who ‘stay behind’ in a period when many leave the country, schools are closed, and tourists flood into the city?
In the exhibition Out of Office (Still Here), Nest examines the notion of ‘leisure’ precisely by opening our doors during the long summer holidays to all those remaining in the city. At the same time, Out of Office (Still Here) unsettles the notion of the holiday as an ideal. The promise of escape and ease is set against personal and political realities: unequal access to sport and play, or the impact of tourism on climate change.

During the May Hollidays, Nest organises two workshops for kids ages 7 to 12. In the spring and summer Hollidays, if the weather allows it, we often live a part of our lives outside. For many children that stay at home during the summer period, playgrounds become the place to be. During these two workshops we look into the world and history of playgrounds. We'll look at some amazing playgrounds designed by artists, and will start working on our own playground and objects to play with.

Exhibition at external location
Just installed at The Hague's Palace of Justice: Esther Hoogendijk – Omwerken
Unfortunately, this exhibition is not open to the public
Fifty rectangular sculptures form a long row in shades of pink, magenta and lilac, crossing the roof garden of the Palace of Justice.
These sculptures by Esther Hoogendijk are coloured with inks that react to moisture: under the influence of rain, dew and condensation, the colours shift subtly from pink to light purple. As flower and grass seeds have been incorporated into some of the sculptures, green shoots slowly break through as time passes.
Esther Hoogendijk is the sixth artist in a series of eight solo exhibitions at the Palace of Justice. The exhibition is curated by Daphne Verberg and is organised in collaboration between Atelier and Nest. Unfortunately, this exhibition is not open to the public. But you can still see Robert Pauwel’s exhibition 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 (until April 20th) and afra eisma’s 𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘱 𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 (until June 30th) at the palace.
Nest has a new Supervisory Board director: Sharon Gesthuizen!
We are pleased to welcome our new director of the Supervisory Board: Sharon Gesthuizen. Until recently, Sharon was Director of Art & Design at ArtEZ Academy in Arnhem. Previously, she served as a supervisor at HKU and at various cultural institutions in The Hague. She has lived in The Hague for nearly twenty years and knows the Hague art world from the inside out. Additionally, Sharon is passionate about democracy and justice: she served as a Member of Parliament for ten years and is currently completing her law studies in Rotterdam.
With her broad experience in art education as well as politics, she is close to artistic practice. This fits well with Nest, where talent development and mentoring young makers are central. Sharon: “For these makers, places like Nest are indispensable. They find space there for and exhibition. That is something I am happy to dedicate myself to!”
After eight years, we are also saying goodbye to director Susan Gloudemans. For eight years, she brought infectious energy to Nest. Under her enthusiastic and committed chairmanship, the organization underwent, among other things, a transformation from an executive board to a supervisory board. She provided space for Nest's artistic development, allowing new ideas and to flourish. In 2026, Nest is a solid and professional institution, located in the recently renovated building on Constant Rebecqueplein in The Hague. The entire team and the Supervisory Board of Nest are very grateful to Susan Gloudemans for her role in this.

This weekend over 140 artists in The Hague open the doors to their studios during Bermuda Open Studios. At more than 20 locations throughout the city you can view the process of The Hague's artistic community.
During the weekend, Nest hosts a small exhibition with some of the participating artists.
