Join us at SAC Art Amsterdam for two immersive events over the next month.
April 30th | 17:00-20:00
Art Night Thursday: ‘Elsewhere & In-Between’ A Workshop by SAC Art Amsterdam x Collective Irritation
Guided by Havva Malyalizade and Zara Lall, this workshop invites you to write, paint, explore, and dream of a time, place, or object from your memories of home. You will use pre-prepared natural pigments made from materials such as coffee, tea, turmeric, beetroot, and henna, along with other spices, as well as objects that hold personal resonance, whether through scent, touch, or memory, which we encourage you to bring along.
Set against the backdrop of the works in the current show ‘A Quiet Presence’, the workshop will draw inspiration from Yashwant Deshmukh's visuals of kites, waterfalls, huts, pots of water, or sun-drenched fields, and from sensorial images from your memories of home - perhaps a jug that sat on your dining table, the smell of your grandmother dyeing her hair with henna, or the taste of a familiar home-cooked meal.
Beginning with a writing exercise, the workshop will unfold into the co-creation of an installation that will remain at the gallery, and end with you making a painting that you can take home.
On this evening of Art Night Thursday, 30th April, the gallery will be open from 16:00 -20:00 (open and free). The workshop will be guided from 17:00–20:00 and is a ticketed event. Student discounts available. Details in the link below.
Join us for an afternoon of visual, conversational, and culinary indulgence, hosted by Tasty Talks × SAC Art Amsterdam
Drawing from Maharashtra, India, Yashwant Deshmukh's home state, the menu for the afternoon will be an extension of the visual language of the artist. Perfectly formed sabudana vadas, pillowy soft vada pavs, fragrant and steaming puran polis, and sweet-tart mango shrikhand mini tarts will be your starters for the afternoon, followed by a guided tour of the show as your main, and an open discussion about art, food, home, flavours, textures, and all things soulful over endless cups of masala chai as your dessert.
The afternoon will take its cue from the art, where form, space, shape, and texture are held in quiet attention, inviting the viewer for longer, closer looks. Ticket details are available in the link below.
‘A Quiet Presence’: Solo Show by Yashwant Deshmukh
On view until May 30th at SAC Art Amsterdam.
Through a language of restraint, Yashwant Deshmukh’s paintings reveal themselves gradually. Forms emerge within subdued fields of colour, inviting a slower way of looking where attention shifts between line, tone, and space. Beginning with familiar shapes drawn from everyday life, these forms move beyond their utilitarian context, hovering between object and abstraction.
As the artist notes, “My painting is not about shapes. It is about space.”
Critic Ranjit Hoskote has described these works as explorations of the “life and afterlife of objects,” where humble forms move beyond description and acquire an unexpected intensity of presence.
‘A Quiet Presence’ brings together works that reward sustained attention, where what remains is not the image of a thing, but the experience of its presence.
Visit us Fridays and Saturdays, 13:00–18:00, with appointments available daily.
