Perdu editor Jimena Casas is an Argentine artist who started the workshop Transatlantic Voices a year ago as a workshop series in our bookshop, emerging from her Avond programming with Argentine poet Mariano Blatt and poet Maxime Garcia Diaz. This Monday she starts a new workshop series in Outline studios in Amsterdam.
Hi Jimena, How did Transatlantic Voices come about?
"As an Argentine artist, I was seeking belonging in Amsterdam, searching for Latin American traces, voices and presences. Instead, I found an absence of contemporary female and queer voices in the city's poetry and art scenes. Despite their strong readerships in Latin America, these poets remain largely absent in contexts and local bookshops.
The canon is still dominated by repetitive, male-centered references. In response, I began curating Transatlantic poetry events to reclaim these narratives, inviting poets like Angélica Freitas, Cecilia Pavón and Maricela Guerrero to Amsterdam for the very first time. That grew to become the workshop series Transatlantic Voices."
Why is it important for you to deep-dive into specifically Latin American feminist poetry?
"Besides my desire to bring Latin American female and queer voices into Amsterdam's cultural landscape, I see this as both urgent and necessary in the context of ongoing inequality and violence.
Transatlantic Voices is about amplifying women and queer writers, and challenging how knowledge is produced and circulated. It seeks to decentralize a North-oriented perspective and instead foreground Latin American feminist sensitivity."
What are your inspirations? "Joaquín Torres García's painting Inverted America (1945) with its message 'our North is the South.' He moved beyond traditional hierarchies by framing South American art on its own terms, rather than defining it in relation to the art of the North (such as the United States and Europe).
And as far as the form of the workshop goes, I am inspired by the independent and collaborative art scenes in Buenos Aires, especially from Cecilia Pavón in her initiative of Belleza y Felicidad, an artist-run space that functioned as a gallery, bookstore, and social hub. It became an important platform for young artists and writers."
"Transatlantic Voices is also about creating community. Everyone ends up being friends and continues to hang out after the workshop edition culminates. The workshop is conceived as a platform for poetic reciprocity, critical thinking, and empathy within and among our multi-tongued ecosystem. It seeks to cultivate nurturing yet honest feedback sessions, where intuitive structures of dialogue, insight, and listening come into play."

Een paar dagen voor Marie Stoppelman's 30ste verjaardag in 1944 werd ze opgepakt. Als arts ontkwam Marie aan de gaskamers in Birkenau. Ze werd noodgedwongen Kapo en assistent van Mengele bij zijn gruwelijke experimenten. Bij de bevrijding werd er gezegd dat ze het niet zou overleven, maar deze woorden gaven haar juist levensdrift. De kleine, pittige dame was niet stuk te krijgen en gaf als kinderarts alles om kinderlevens te redden. Pas tijdens Maries pensioen namen verdrongen herinneringen bezit van haar geheugen.
Hoe overleef je deze ervaringen? Hoe ga je een ‘gewoon’ leven aan? Stuk Stoppelman is een herbeleving van het van Marie, gespeeld door Gonny Gaakeer.
