In the lead-up to Keti Koti, we're bringing you a workshop with contemporary artist, Razia Barsatie. During the workshop, Razia will not only teach us how to prepare Djarpesi Moksi Alesi, a dish she learnt to cook in Paramaribo with her mother, aunts and grandmother, but also unpack the archival value of the dish and its ingredients.
Moksi Alesi, meaning ‘mixed rice’ in Sranan Tongo, is a one-pot dish shaped by survival, adaptation and cultural continuity. It has roots in West African traditions and reflects the Creole, Javanese, Hindustani, Chinese, Indigenous and other influences that have shaped Surinamese food culture.
While the rice stews, we will use the ingredients of Moksi Alesi to tap into our senses, allowing them to prompt memories and associations that we will express through drawing, painting or writing. We will then share a vegetarian version of Moksi Alesi, served with plantain and cucumber salad, along with stories of food as a living archive. We’ll end the afternoon, as one should, with chai and cassava coconut cake.
ABOUT RAZIA BARSATIE
Born in Paramaribo and based in the Netherlands, Razia Barsatie is a Hindoostani visual artist who works with organic materials, scent and texture to explore cultural memory, personal histories and subjects often left unspoken.
Her work is on permanent display at the Suriname Museum in Amsterdam. She has exhibited at SAC Art Amsterdam and Buro Stedelijk, among other venues, and her work can currently be seen in the group exhibition ‘UPDATE II 2026’ at Arti et Amicitiae. Read More...
‘Come Eat With Us?’ brings together works by Deepak Dhiman, Reem Masri, Saviya Lopes and Yogesh Barve, presented in collaboration with Art and Charlie, Mumbai. Across painting, drawing and print, the exhibition considers food, domesticity, identity and resistance, moving through queer family life, feminist histories and landscapes marked by loss and resilience.
On view until 5 July 2026. Open Fridays and Saturdays, 13:00 - 18:00, with viewings available daily by appointment.
