gathering grounds: een feestelijke marktdag

We nodigen je graag uit voor gathering grounds, een feestelijke marktdag waarmee we de laatste dag van flour, water, soil vieren. De verandert in een markt waar we samen kunnen komen om te eten, te praten, aandenkens en etenswaren aan te schaffen en de werken in de nog een allerlaatste keer te bewonderen!
Tijdens deze dag wordt er Bissara Salim verkocht door Salim Bayri en verkoopt Waèl el Allouche Metti harissa. Ook zijn er aan te schaffen van colectivo amasijo, keren Pırıltı Onukar en Ilja Schamlé van Cripping Warmoesstraat terug met hun tincturen en zalfjes van lokaal verzamelde planten, zullen maria khatchadourian en Margarita Osipian Zjengal-brood bakken, maakt Common Ground dips uit de vijzel en verkopen hun zelfgemaakte meelzakken, en verkoopt Anna Kooi siropen en confituren van Nederlandse wilde planten. Tot slot is er een performance van Aimée Theriot-Ramos en Areej Ashhab te zien.
flour, water, soil bevat nieuwe en aangepaste werken van Areej Ashhab, het duo Common Ground (Anna Celda en Saja Amro), Ola Hassanain, maria khatchadourian, Ai Ozaki en belit sağ. Samen houden de werken zich bezig met aarde, zaden, water, fermentatie en verwoesting als ruimtes waar zorg en geweld met elkaar verstrengeld zijn. Ze bevatten verhalen van herstel, onteigening en continuïteit. Meer informatie over flour, water, soil vind je op onze website.

The Nature of Remembering

Vanaf september bij W139: The Nature of Remembering. Deze , geïnitieerd door kunstenaar Lawil Karama in samenwerking met historica Megan Hoetger, toont verschillende die zich bezighouden met het bevragen van normatieve en het met ecologische en lichamen.
De titel van de heeft een tweeledige betekenis. Enerzijds wordt de natuur opgeroepen, waarbij de focus ligt op actanten en actoren buiten en naast de mens – levende entiteiten die getuige zijn van, deelnemen aan, verwijzen naar, terugdenken aan, voorspellingen doen over, en rondwaren in de historische tijd. Anderzijds is de uitdrukking ‘the nature of’ een provocatie, die zich verzet tegen ideologische en met geweld opgelegde opvattingen over herinneren en herdenken.
De deelnemende projecten hebben een streven naar ‘frictioning’: het inzetten van technologieën tegen hun koloniale aard in en het stilstaan bij de affectief, voorouderlijk, archiefkundig en forensisch vervlochten omstandigheden van geleefde ervaring en . Gezamenlijk vragen de werken: Wie of wat kadert en bezielt herdenkingen van geweld, handelingen die onzichtbaar, en ondenkbaar zijn gemaakt?
De bevat werken van Samuel Baidoo, Michèle Boulogne, Laura Fong Prosper en Tin Wilke, Lawil Karama, Aram Lee, Komtouch Napattaloong, Bart Seng Wen Long en Kaisa Saarinen.

Van 2 tot 14 juli staat Amsterdam in het teken van internationale hedendaagse dans, met 26 producties op 9 locaties door heel de stad. Choreografen van over de hele wereld stellen dit jaar een indringende vraag: Wie zijn we, wat zijn we, hoe zijn we zo geworden? Deze mix van indringende, energieke en voorstellingen heet niet voor niets: Straight from the heart.
"We zijn niet meer proud op Pride." In WORLD PRi̶d̶e̶OTEST tonen twintig makers en activisten posters rond onderwerpen die we tijdens Pride niet moeten vergeten; van genocide tot de positie van sekswerkers. Waar ga jij voor staan? Neem de posters gratis mee en hang ze op in de stad of betaal 10 euro en hang ze op in je eigen huis.

W139 feliciteert Sondi met het winnen van de Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs 2026! De aansluitende in Monopole, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, is t/m 2 augustus te zien, en presenteert tevens werk van andere genomineerden afra eisma, Levi van Gelder en Malik Saïb-Mezghiche. Sondi was een van de deelnemede kunstenaars tijdens de Taking Roots Among the Stars, te zien bij W139 eind 2024.

gathering grounds:a festive market day — Sunday 12 July, 12:00–18:00
We invite you to join us for gathering grounds, a festive market day, where we will celebrate the final day of flour, water, soil. The exhibition will transform into a market where we can all come together to eat, talk, buy food and souvenirs, and collectively enjoy the works in the exhibition one last time!
Joining us for the day are Salim Bayri who will be selling Bissara Salim, and Waèl el Allouche who will be selling Metti harissa. Next to that Risoprint posters made by colectivo amasijo will be available, and Pırıltı Onukar and Ilja Schamlé from Cripping Warmoesstraatwill return with their tinctures and salves from local foraged plants. maria khatchadourian and Margarita Osipian will be baking Zhingyalov hats bread, Common Ground will be making dips straight from the mortar and pestle and will sell their flour bags, and Anna kooi will sell syrups and small preserves from wild Dutch plants. Lastly Aimée Theriot-Ramos and Areej Ashhab will join us for a performance.
flour, water, soil takes shape through new and adapted site-specific works by Areej Ashhab, the duo Common Ground (Anna Celda and Saja Amro), Ola Hassanain, maria khatchadourian, Ai Ozaki and belit sağ. Together, the works attend to soil, seed, water, fermentation, and ruin as sites where care and violence are entangled—holding stories of repair, dispossession, and continuity. The Nature of Remembering

This September at W139: The Nature of Remembering. This group exhibition, initiated by artist Lawil Karama in conversation with historian Megan Hoetger, features multimedia research projects that move between interrogation of normative memory politics and with environmental and bodies.
The exhibition title carries two meanings. On the one hand, nature is evoked, drawing focus to actants, actors, and animacies beyond and beside the human, who witness, participate in, index, recollect, foretell, and haunt historical time. On the other hand, the idiomatic expression the nature of is taken up as a provocation, pushing against pervasive ideological and violently enforced notions of remembering and of commemorating.
Running through all projects is a commitment to practices of frictioning: engaging technologies against their colonial grain, and lingering in the affectively, ancestrally, archivally, and forensically intertwined conditions of lived experience and knowledge production. Collectively the works ask: Who, or what, enframes and enlivens acts of remembering violence, which have been rendered invisible, unspeakable, and unthinkable?
The exhibition features work by Samuel Baidoo, Michèle Boulogne, Laura Fong Prosper and Tin Wilke, Lawil Karama, Aram Lee, Komtouch Napattaloong, Kaisa Saarinen, and Bart Seng Wen Long.

From 2 to 14 July, Amsterdam is the stage for international contemporary dance, with 26 productions across 9 venues throughout the city. Choreographers from around the world are asking a pressing question this year: Who are we, what are we, how did we become this way? It will be a mix of powerful, energetic and performances, as the title suggests: Straight from the heart.
"We are no longer proud at Pride." In WORLD PRi̶d̶e̶OTEST, twenty creators and activists display posters on topics we must not forget during Pride; from genocide to the position of sex workers. What will you stand for? Take the posters for free and hang them up around the city, or pay 10 euros and display them in your own home.

W139 congratulates Sondi on winning the 2026 Volkskrant Visual Arts Prize! The accompanying exhibition at Monopole, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, runs until 2 August and also features work by the other nominees: afra eisma, Levi van Gelder and Malik Saïb-Mezghiche. Sondi was one of the artists featured in the exhibition Taking Roots Among the Stars, which was on show at W139 in late 2024.
