Nest is deze weken gesloten, maar intussen werken we hard aan onze nieuwe Creation Myths and Other Beginnings. Een waarin centraal staan.
Het zijn verhalen die overal ter wereld te vinden zijn en iets vertellen over een collectieve identiteit, een moreel kompas, een dat mensen verbindt en betekenis geeft aan tradities en waarden. Maar zijn nooit neutraal. Ze kunnen legitimeren, een status quo in stand houden en andere verhalen juist onderdrukken.
In Creation Myths and Other Beginnings vind je een veelvoud aan niet-dominante terug. Verhalen die via orale cultuur werden overgedragen van generatie op generatie of juist speculatieve, fictieve alternatieven. Dertien internationale kunstenaars dagen je uit van deze verhalen te leren over onze sociale werkelijkheid en mogelijke toekomst.

Welkomstwoord curator en algemeen directeur Laurie Cluitmans
Zijn rotsen gemaakt of geboren? Het is een vraag die schrijver Clarice Lispector al als kind bezighield. Haar antwoord luidde: rotsen zijn.
Tijdens Verwend Nest met kunstenaar Sara Pape onderzoek je die vraag verder. In Nest staan grote rotssculpturen met water en inkt. Tussen deze rotsen ga je aan de slag met suminagashi, een Japanse techniek waarbij inkt op water bijzondere patronen maakt. De patronen doen denken aan en aardlagen. Vanuit deze verzin je je eigen verhalen en maak je een boekje dat je mee naar huis mag nemen.
Deze workshop is ontwikkeld door Sara Pape in co-productie met Rewire Festival.
Nest nodigt studenten van de KABK uit om zich aan te melden voor de One Nest Stand 2026. One Nest Stand zijn van een weekend waarin studenten reageren op een bij Nest. De editie van dit jaar vindt plaats in Nest in Laak, en zal een reactie zijn op Creation Myths and Other Beginnings die tegelijkertijd in Nest te zien is.

Van september tot en met december host Nest in iedere week Verbonden Verleden. Verbonden Verleden is een project van Community Plus dat verschillende verhalen uit de Surinaamse koloniale geschiedenis samenbrengt en onderzoekt hoe deze geschiedenis doorwerkt in onze cultuur, identiteit en samenleving van vandaag. Hoe meer verhalen we horen, hoe groter en completer ons beeld van het verleden wordt. Want wie zijn we, als we niet weten waar we vandaan komen?

16 september bij Nest: The Façade boekdiner

Aan het begin van de zeventiende eeuw koloniseerde Nederland Brazilië. Brazilië stond tientallen jaren onder Nederlands gezag, onder meer onder leiding van Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, oprichter van het Mauritshuis. Hoewel deze koloniale periode relatief kort was, heeft het een blijvende impact gehad op zowel Brazilië als Nederland – en in het bijzonder op Den Haag. Hoe verhouden we ons tot deze geschiedenis, die voor veel mensen onbekend is, maar tegelijkertijd is in het straatbeeld van Den Haag? Onderzoeker Carolina Monteiro en kunstenaar Rafael Roncato gingen met deze vragen aan de slag en maakten in samenwerking met Nest het boek The Façade.
Op 16 september nodigen we je uit voor een bijzondere avond waarin eten, kunst, geschiedenis en ontmoeting samenkomen. Aan de hand van verhalen uit het boek, fotografie, en de historische achtergrond van de gerechten gaan we in gesprek over de geschiedenis van ë en de doorwerking daarvan in het heden.
De avond biedt ruimte voor ontmoeting en uitwisseling. Via , interactieve opdrachten en samen eten nodigen we je uit om ervaringen, herinneringen en perspectieven met elkaar te delen. Het event wordt afgesloten met een Braziliaans muzikaal optreden. Het boek The Façade vormt het vertrekpunt voor de avond, maar voorkennis is niet nodig. Of je de publicatie al hebt gelezen of er voor het eerst mee kennismaakt: iedereen is van harte welkom om aan te schuiven. Tickets zijn verkrijgbaar via onderstaande link.

Nest is currently closed for a few weeks, but behind the scenes we're working hard on our new exhibition Creation Myths and Other Beginnings. An international group exhibition that centres stories of origin.
These narratives speak of collective identity, moral frameworks and shared points of reference that connect people and lend meaning to traditions and values. Yet creation myths are never neutral. They can legitimise systems of power, reinforce the status quo, and silence alternative narratives.
In Creation Myths and Other Beginnings you will find many non-dominant creation myths. Stories that have been transmitted through oral traditions across generations, as well as speculative and fictional alternatives. Thirteen artists invite you to learn from these stories about our social reality, and about the futures we might yet imagine.

Are rocks made, or are they born? It was a question that fascinated writer Clarice Lispector from childhood. Her answer was simple: rocks are.
During Verwend Nest, artist Sara Pape invites you to explore this question further. Nest will be filled with large rock sculptures, water and ink. Among these rocks, you will experiment with suminagashi, a Japanese technique in which ink floating on water creates beautiful, unexpected patterns. These patterns evoke mountain landscapes and layers of the earth. Using your ink paintings as a starting point, you will invent your own stories and create a small booklet to take home with you.
This workshop was created by Sara Pape in co-production with Rewire Festival.
Nest invites students of the KABK to apply for the One Nest Stand programme of 2026. One Nest Stand are exhibitions of just one weekend, in which students respond to an exhibition at Nest. This years edition will take place at Nest in Laak and will be a response to Creation Myths and Other Beginnings, which can be seen at Nest

16 September at Nest: The Façade book dinner

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the Netherlands colonised Brazil. Brazil remained under Dutch rule for several decades, including under the leadership of Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, founder of the Mauritshuis. Although this colonial period was relatively short, it has had a lasting impact on both Brazil and the Netherlands – and particularly on The Hague. How do we relate to this history, which is unknown to many people, yet at the same time is omnipresent in the streetscape of The Hague? Researcher Carolina Monteiro and artist Rafael Roncato explored these questions and, in collaboration with Nest, created the book The Façade.
On September 16th we invite you to a special evening bringing together food, art, history and conversation. Through stories from the book, photography, archival material and the historical background of the dishes, we will explore the history of Dutch Brazil and the ways in which it continues to shape the present.
The evening offers space for meeting and exchanging ideas. Through conversations at the table, interactive activities and sharing a meal, we invite you to exchange experiences, memories and perspectives. The event will conclude with a Brazilian musical performance. The Façade forms the starting point for the evening, but no prior knowledge is required. Whether you have already read the publication or are encountering it for the first time, everyone is warmly invited to join us.
