fanfare is pleased to introduce the third edition of Broken Channels on 18th & 19th October 2025–two days of public experiences that investigate case studies on design with planetary impact.
In our 2025 edition, we focus on the theme of waste. We will experiment with uses and reuses of lead type together with Stichting Lettergieten and loop along the A-10 urban highway in a live sonic activation about circularity, mobility and movement.
Return to the source: Join us for a journey tothe origins of the printing industry, visiting the typefoundry Stichting Lettergieten and the paper mill De Schoolmeester in Westzaan. Together with Lettergieten, fanfare has experimented with melting discarded printing lead type. Together, we liquified, blended and evaporated letterpress metal alloy, to re-appropriate the means of production while questioning traditional forms of assembly. Continuing this dialogue, Trang Hà will “mould” lead and pulp into a food experience—an invitation to participate, enjoy, and reflect on the processes of forging and molding.
“No hay banda
There is no band! No hay banda! and yet we hear a band. If we want to hear a clarinette... listen... Un trombon "à coulisse". Un trombon "con sordina". Sient le son du trombon in sourdine. Hear le son... and mute it... drop it...”
A group of cars will loop Amsterdam’s A10 ring road in a live sonic activation that explores circularity, mobility, and the materiality of infrastructure. The A10 — the Netherlands’ only purpose-built ring highway — has long been a testing ground for silent asphalt, a multilayer porous pavement that absorbs car noise and reshapes the acoustic experience of the city.
Once celebrated as an innovation to reduce traffic sound and address safety and environmental concerns, this technology also reflects how state, oil industry, and science mediate the frictions between humans and infrastructure.
Through experimental broadcasting and expert voices, Circular: A10 invites participants to question what it means to silence a road, what social and spatial dynamics are muted with it, and how the ring road’s circular form reinforces Amsterdam’s center–periphery divide while embodying new paradigms of urban circularity. An experience crafted by Circular in collaboration with artists Andrés García Vidal, Angeliki Diakrousi, with the voices and knowledge of Wouter Ghyoot, Jan Hooghwerff, Mark Mertens and Narcis Molina Montasell among other surprises.
The programme features two excursions by bus/car, available through reservation only. Please dress warmly. While small snacks and drinks will be provided during the experience, you're welcome to bring a packed lunch if needed.
Please note that the meeting points are not at fanfare, but in a location that will be sent to the registered participants.
