Celebrating One Year of Zoöp Amstelpark
|

Zoöp Amstelpark celebrates its first anniversary on October 4, a milestone we wish to mark. Zoöp Amstelpark is the first public Zoöp – an alternative form of organizing in which we learn together how to incorporate the interests of all life into our decision making processes – comprising of Zone2Source, the City of Amsterdam, and the Sustainability Institute Amsterdam (VU). It is a learning space for the city where artistic research, science, and policy come together to jointly build on new systems for a future in which truly every voice - human and more than human - counts in our city. We cordially invite you to three events to join us in reflecting and acting together on the transitions we need to make. On Thursday October 1, we will discuss how zoonomic principles relate to the living heritage of the Amstelpark. On Friday October 2, we will get down to concrete work together using a roadmap to anchor nature rights in policy. On the celebration day itself, we are organizing a workshop to launch a Children's Council for Zoöp Amstelpark. The results and insights of these events we bring to another year of Zoöp Amstelpark to continue to build together on the transitions we urgently need for a better co-habitation of a shared earth! |

Living Heritage in and beyond Amstelpark
Speakers: Imke van Hellemondt (independent researcher, History of Landscape Architecture), Joost Emmerik (landscape architect, Amsterdam Academy of Architecture), Elyze Storms-Smeets (Prof. Cultural Geography, Radboud University), Janna oud Ammerveld (Critical Heritage Researcher, Utrecht University), Theun Karelse and Anne Jesuina de Andrade (artist and Speakers with the Living, Zoöp Amstelpark). Moderators: Marilena Mela (Environmental Humanities Center V.U.) and Colin Sterling (Critical Heritage Ecologies, UvA).

What does it mean when a heritage site becomes a Zoöp?
Or…. vice versa – when a Zoöp is also a heritage site? Our central question is: can the heritage of the Amstelpark, as the location of the 1972 Floriade, become a learning ground for the ecological issues of our time? The symposium consists of two panels: the first addresses the monument status of the Amstelpark and the history of the Floriade, and in the second panel, we look at alternative approaches to living heritage. This symposium is organized by Zone2Source (Alice Smits) in collaboration with the Environmental Humanities Center Amsterdam (Katja Kwastek, Marilena Mela) and UvA Critical Heritage Ecologies (Colin Sterling). Towards Rights for Nature: a Practical Pathway
Friday, October 2 • 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM Together with the Rights of Nature Foundation and the Zoönomic Institute, we are organizing an afternoon where we will gather with various municipal initiatives and stakeholders to assess where we stand and what is needed to effectively anchor the rights of nature in policy. Legal expert Jan van de Venis will introduce his "Pathway to Rights of Nature" for municipalities, which we will use as a basis for working together on three case studies: Zoöp Amstelpark, Rights of Nature for the Amstel, Declaration Rights of Nature Amsterdam Noord. In these cases, we will also explore how the Zoöp and the Rights of Nature movement can reinforce each other in the struggle for an eco-just society. Open call for a Children’s Council for Zoöp Amstelpark
Introduction workshop On October 4, exactly one year after Zone2Source signed the founding contract for Zoöp Amstelpark together with the Municipality of Amsterdam, we are launching the plans for a Children's Council. The Zoöp Amstelpark Children's Council will consist of 9 children aged 8 to 12. For six months, they will have a voice in a part of the Amstelpark and will be trained as Speakers of the Living. The central question of the Children's Council is: "How can children act as guides to interact with the living world in a better way?" Do you want to participate? Are you a child aged 8 to 12 and would you like to become a member of the Children's Council, or are you curious about what we are going to do? Or are you a parent/guardian and would you like to know more? Then come to the introductory workshop on October 4 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, or send an email to info@zone2source.net for more information. The Children's Council is a collaboration between Zone2Source with Emer Beamer (social design researcher and educator), Theun Karelse (artist and Speaker with the Living Zoöp Amstelpark) and SeMUel Sahureka (spokesperson foundation Saka Mese AllifURU). |

Transition with us
As a testing ground for art and ecology, and as a Zoöp, we do not merely want to thematize the subject but also walk the talk. We are in the midst of developing concrete plans as an organization to engage with the transition: regarding waste, transport, materials, language, energy, our daily interactions with each other and the world around us …. and with the technology we use. An eco-just society can only exist if we turn away from Big Tech and start working with independent, transparent and just systems. And as consumers, we wield enormous power if we take action en masse. With this newsletter we have turned away from Mailchimp and start working with Keila and GrapesJS, a step towards greater digital autonomy. After changing our cloud storage to Nextcloud, we are now planning to stop with Instagram and Facebook as of January 27, 2027. We hope you will transit with us in large numbers to independent open source social media Mastodon and Pixelfed. See you all there! |
